How I Ended Up in IBCP AI
Most students in India haven't even heard of the IBCP the IB Career-related Programme. When I chose Artificial Intelligence as my career-related study in Grade 11, the reactions ranged from "That sounds cool" to "Is that even a real subject?" The answer is yes, and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made.
I was always drawn to technology. By Class 9, I was already writing Python scripts for fun and building small websites. When Aspee Nutan Academy offered IBCP with an AI specialisation, it felt like the programme was designed for me.
What the Curriculum Actually Covers
The IBCP isn't just theory it's built around real-world application. Here's what a typical week looks like for me:
- AI & Machine Learning Supervised/unsupervised learning, neural networks, model evaluation, ethics in AI
- Python Programming Data structures, algorithms, OOP, working with APIs and libraries like NumPy and Pandas
- Personal & Professional Skills Project management, communication, ethical reasoning (yes, soft skills matter)
- Reflective Project A 3,000-word research essay on an ethical dilemma related to your career field
- Service Learning Community engagement projects using our technical skills
The Projects That Shaped Me
The best part of IBCP is the project work. Instead of just studying theory from textbooks, you build real things:
My Rocket Launch Simulator was a physics-based Python application modelling real-time trajectory, thrust, and drag calculations. It taught me more about algorithms and optimisation than any textbook could.
The Crypto Analytics Dashboard combined everything Streamlit for the interface, Pandas for data manipulation, Plotly for visualisation, and real-time API calls for live market data. Presenting it to the IB assessors felt like pitching a startup product.
The Honest Challenges
It's not all smooth sailing. Here's what caught me off guard:
- Workload management Balancing IB coursework, AI projects, and freelance web development is genuinely difficult. There have been weeks where I slept 4 hours a night
- Limited peers Very few students in India take IBCP AI. Sometimes you're the only one in the room who understands what you're working on
- Self-learning pressure The curriculum gives you direction, but mastering tools like the Gemini API or Streamlit requires serious self-study
- Explaining it to everyone "So is it like engineering?" No, it's not. It's a pre-university programme. Having this conversation regularly gets tiring
What I've Gained
Despite the challenges, the programme has given me advantages I wouldn't trade:
- A real portfolio By Grade 11, I have live client websites, published data apps, and AI projects on GitHub. Most students start a portfolio in university
- Industry-ready skills I can build full-stack web applications, work with APIs, deploy data dashboards, and integrate AI models. These aren't hypothetical skills I use them for paying clients
- Critical thinking The IB framework forces you to think about the ethics, implications, and social impact of everything you build
- Independence I've learned to manage my own projects, meet deadlines, and solve problems without waiting for someone to teach me step by step
Advice for Students Considering IBCP
If you're in Grade 9 or 10 and thinking about IBCP, here's my honest advice:
- Only choose it if you're genuinely passionate This isn't a programme you coast through. You need intrinsic motivation
- Start building early Learn basic Python and HTML/CSS before Grade 11. You'll thank yourself later
- Document everything Your projects, your learning, your reflections. The IB assessors care about your process, not just the end product
- Find a community online Join Discord servers, GitHub discussions, and Reddit communities. The IBCP community is small but incredibly supportive
- Don't compare yourself to IB Diploma students The paths are different. Both are valid. IBCP gives you specialisation that diploma students don't have
Looking Ahead
As I approach Grade 12, I'm focused on deepening my AI knowledge, pursuing my CEH certification in cybersecurity, and expanding my freelance web development practice. The IBCP gave me a foundation now it's time to build something real on top of it.
